Welcome to the official site of the Rockland County Swimming Alumni. Many people have asked, "how did this start?". Well here is the history:
This event had been an idea of mine (and I am finding out, many others) for over 10 years. I had always thought to myself after going to the high school reunions that "these reunions are ok, but what would really be awesome would be to see those people we spent so much time with and grew up with in the swimming world". So I kept mentioning it to about a half dozen people I still spoke with (including Bob) and everyone thought it was a great idea. Whenever I ran into someone over the years, I would think about it again and mention the idea to the person. It seemed like a great idea to everyone, but nobody (including myself) did anything about it. The one thing I started doing over 10 years ago was compiling a list of names on my computer and would add new names as I thought of them. Finally, after going to a college swimming reunion in 2005, I decided to do one for Rockland. I started by emailing (in September I think) the list to about 6 people and told them to just add names or any info you have and forward the list around. I was skeptical whether we could really get a large list of contacts as it had been so long since we had seen each other. It started out a little slow because I think we all had some doubts about it coming together. Then, pretty much out of the blue, it started gaining momentum (or as Donna Fedor put it, "we have reached a critical mass and now have more credibility"). I think it was due to the phenomenon of "tell five friends, and they each tell five friends, and so on...". Then people started seeing all the names and getting pretty excited. I started by doing a spreadsheet and updating everyone weekly. Then it got so big, I went to the website.
The first reunion was on July 22, 2006 and was a huge success. You can view people's feedback and photos at this site.
This website will continue so that people have a place to contact old friends, recruit others to sign on, and plan future events. If you have any additional feedback, please email btovin@sportsrehabcenter.com
